Most Populated Countries

The Biggest Countries in the World by Population

The population of the world has been increasing since the beginning of mankind (well, except for the Great Famine in between 1315 – 1317 and the Black Death in 1350 when literally millions of people died [1]) and chances are it is never going to start decreasing, unless something bad, really bad (like a global disaster) happens. The numbers suggest that the rate of world’s population growth is 1,1% annually, which is approximately 76 million people every year [2]. Needless to say, this is the difference between births and deaths in a year, which means the global birth rate is higher than that.

The world population 35.000 years ago is thought to be around 3 million [3] and the estimated world population as of today (2014) is 7.272.076.000 by now [4]. The most populated continent is Asia with an estimated population of 4.298.000.000. The least populated continent, on the other hand, seems to be Oceania with a population of 38.000.000 (Antarctica doesn’t count since there’s no country or city there, except for some labs and meteorological stations.).

But what about the countries? Which countries are the most populated ones? Let’s have a look at the numbers from 10 to 1 [5].

10. Japan

Most of you may already know Tokyo is one of the most populated countries in the world. According to the official monthly estimate (October, 2014) of Japan’s population, there are 127.090.000 people living in Japan, which makes the country the 10th biggest one by population.

9. Russia

Russia is a huge country, right. As a matter of fact, the country is the largest one in the world by area. At the same time, Russia is the 9th most populated country in the world with a population of 146.149.200, a number which is provided by the official August 2014 estimate.

8. Bangladesh

8th Most Crowded Country in the World - Bangladesh

Bangladesh, not only crowded with people…

There’s something with Asia when it comes to population, as we stated in the beginning. Bangladesh, like some of its neighbors, is among the top 10 biggest countries in the world by population with a population of 157.255.000. No wonder why it is so difficult to govern the country properly.

7. Nigeria

The only African country in the list, Nigeria is the 7th country in the world by population. The country has 178.517.000 people living within its body, also claiming the title “The Most Crowded Country In Africa”.

6. Pakistan

Again like its neighbors, Pakistan is among the most populated countries in the world, although the founding (or independence) of the country does not have such a long history. With a population of 188.020.000 by July 2014 data, Pakistan is the 6th most crowded country in the world.

5. Brazil

You know what this is…

One of the growing economies of the 20th century, Brazil has also grown its population up to 203,290,000 by November 2014, which makes the country the 5th most populated one in the world.

4. Indonesia

A south eastern Asian country, yet again. Indonesia, by July 2014, appears to be the 4th most populated country in the world with a population of 252.164.800.

3. United States

The second largest country in the Americas by area, the United States of America is also quite assertive when it comes to reproduction, claiming the title “the 3rd most populated country in the world” with a population of 319.026.000.

2. India

India seems to be competing with the rest of the world (or only with China) in reproduction. The second most populated country in the world, India has a population of 1.261.950.000.

1. China

Shanghai, China

Although in some parts of the country families are allowed to have two children nowadays, China still has a strict one-child policy especially in the densely populated areas, but this doesn’t really keep the country from being “the most populated country in the world”. With a population of 1.367.680.000, China is the most crowded country in the world.
