16 Facts About Tourism

Tourism is a global sector like food or health. Because people have been moving from point A to point B since the beginning of history and they’re not likely to come to a halt any time soon. Today, we’d like to share with you some facts about tourism which we hope you’ll find interesting. Some numbers are so shocking (if Barney Stinson saw them, he’d say legen… wait for it… DARY! probably) that we have decided to publish them as “myths”. Here we go…

1. Cruise ship terminals in Turkey are in the cities of Alanya, Antalya, Bodrum, Çanakkale, Çeşme, Dikili, Fethiye, Güllük, İstanbul, İzmir, Kuşadası, Marmaris, Samsun, Trabzon, ordered alphabetically.

2. All-inclusive concept started in the Caribbean in 1970’s. The purpose was to reduce the costs and increase luxury holiday options in tropical destinations.

3. The largest hotel in the world is Izmailovo Hotel, Moscow, Russia. The hotel consists of 4 blocks with 30 storeys and 7500 rooms total. The construction of the hotel was completed in 1979 so that it would be ready for the summer olympics of 1980.

4. The cheapest hotel in the world is Garden Village Guesthose in the Siem Reap region of Cambodia. The three walls and roofs of the rooms are made of bushes. The rate for a night is only 1 US Dollar!

5. The most expensive hotel room in the world (or suite) is ‘The Royal Penthouse Suite’ in President Wilson Hotel, Switzerland. The nightly rate of the room, $65.000 is equivalent to the money many people earn in years.

6. The largest hotel room in the world (may be we should say suite) is located in Grand Hills Hotel, Beirut, Lebanon. The room is 4.134 m² and the rate for a night is 48.000$. 

7. The smallest hotel room in the world is located in the ‘Central Hotel’, Copenhagen, Denmark. The room’s size is 2.5×3.5 meters and there’s a twin bed, a really small bathroom, several cupboards and a TV inside. The daily rate for the room is 170 Euros!!

8. The oldest hotel in the world, which is still working is Nisiyama Onsen Keiunkan in Yamanashi, Japan. Serving customers since 705 AD (for 1309 years), has been run by 52 owners so far. The hotel is the second oldest company in the world after Kongo Gumi (508 AD).

9. The most expensive tour in the world, with a price of 1.5 Million Dollars, covers 962 UNESCO World Heritage sites and 150 countries. The company that organizes the tour is located in London. If you save 50 Euros every month for a holiday, you can collect the required amount in approximately 2875 years.

10. The country that attracts the most tourists, according to 2012 data is France with 83.000.000 tourists. In the same year, Turkey was the 6th in the line with 35.700.000 tourists.

11. The country that attracts the least tourists, according to 2011 data this time is Nauru, near Papua New Guinea in the Pacific. Only 200 tourists enter the country each year and the number is less than 0,001 percent of France.

12. The longest coast line in the world is in Canada with a total length of 202.080 km. This number is 25 times more than Turkey’s coast line, which is about 8.333 km.

13. The shortest coast line in the world is in Monaco with a total length of 4.1 km. Turkey’s coast line is 2032 times more than that.

14. The first known tour operator is Thomas Cook, an Australian who lived in England. He quits his job as a carpenter in 1841 and takes 571 people to a festival, 20 km far from where they are at that time. This is the first tourism move that is known.

15. The country with the largest number of malls in the world is the USA with 46,990 malls.

16. The largerst shopping mall in the world is New South China Mall with a land area of 892.000 m². The mall is in the Dongguan province of China.
